2011-10-26perf ui browser: Handle K_RESIZE in dialog windowsArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
Just provide wrappers for things like ui__warning, ui__dialog_yesno and if they return K_RESIZE, refresh dimensions, redraw the entries, etc. Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-3ih7hyk9weryxaxb501sfq4u@git.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

2011-03-29perf tools: Fixup exit path when not able to open eventsArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
We have to deal with the TUI mode in perf top, so that we don't end up with a garbled screen when, say, a non root user on a machine with a paranoid setting (the default) tries to use 'perf top'. Introduce a ui__warning_paranoid() routine shared by top and record that tells the user the valid values for /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_paranoid. 2010-11-27perf tools: Fix lost and unknown events handlingArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
Fix it by explaining what can be happening and giving the number of processed and lost events. Also holler if unknown events were found, that can be due to processing a perf.data file collected using a newer tool where newer events got added on reporting using an older perf tool, that or a bug, so ask for a report to be made. Works on both --tui and --stdio. 2010-06-17perf debug: fix hex dump partial final lineAndy Isaacson
The loop counter math in trace_event was much more complicated than necessary, resulting in incorrectly decoding the human-readable portion of the partial last line of hexdump in "perf trace -D" output: . 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2f 73 62 69 6e 2f 69 6e ......../sbin/i . 0030: 69 74 00 00 00 00 00 00 /sbin/i With this fixed (and simpler!) code, we get the correct output: . 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2f 73 62 69 6e 2f 69 6e ......../sbin/in . 0030: 69 74 00 00 00 00 00 00 it...... 2010-05-27perf tui: Fix last use_browser problem related to .perfconfigArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
When we moved to using ~/.perfconfig to set the value of use_browser, it changed from a boolean to an int so that the convention used for use_pager was followed. That convention is: -1: unspecified, that is what use_{browser,pager} is initialized 0: Don't use the browser (should be TUI), because was explicitely set to 0/off/false on ~/.perfconfig [tui] cmd =, or because we're redirecting the stdout to a file or piping it to some other command (!isatty()). 1: Use the TUI Some code was not properly audited and continued testing it as a boolean, this seems to be the last one. 2010-04-14perf: Fix endianness argument compatibility with OPT_BOOLEAN() and introduce ↵Ian Munsie
OPT_INCR() Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool and would therefore print out the usage information and terminate. This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is currently the only such example of this). I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints. The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses OPT_INCR instead of OPT_BOOLEAN. Signed-off-by: Ian Munsie <imunsie@au.ibm.com> Acked-by: David S. 2010-03-12perf report: Implement initial UI using newtArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
Newt has widespread availability and provides a rather simple API as can be seen by the size of this patch. The work needed to support it will benefit other frontends too. In this initial patch it just checks if the output is a tty, if not it falls back to the previous behaviour, also if newt-devel/libnewt-dev is not installed the previous behaviour is maintaned. Pressing enter on a symbol will annotate it, ESC in the annotation window will return to the report symbol list. More work will be done to remove the special casing in color_fprintf, stop using fmemopen/FILE in the printing of hist_entries, etc. Also the annotation doesn't need to be done via spawning "perf annotate" and then browsing its output, we can do better by calling directly the builtin-annotate.c functions, that would then be moved to tools/perf/util/annotate.c and shared with perf top, etc But lets go by baby steps, this patch already improves perf usability by allowing to quickly do annotations on symbols from the report screen and provides a first experimentation with libnewt/TUI integration of tools. Tested on RHEL5 and Fedora12 X86_64 and on Debian PARISC64 to browse a perf.data file collected on a Fedora12 x86_64 box. 2009-08-16perf tools: Librarize trace_event() helperFrederic Weisbecker
Librarize trace_event() helper so that perf trace can use it too. Also clean up the debug.h includes a bit. It's not good to have it included in perf.h because it doesn't make it flexible against other headers it may need (headers that can also depend on perf.h and then create a recursive header dependency). 2009-08-16perf tools: Factorize the dprintf definitionFrederic Weisbecker
We have two users of dprintf: report and annotate. Another one is coming with perf trace. Then factorize it into the debug file. While at it, rename dprintf() to dump_printf() so that it doesn't conflicts with its libc homograph.
