acpi_processor_set_throttling() uses set_cpus_allowed_ptr() to make
sure that the (struct acpi_processor)->acpi_processor_set_throttling()
callback will run on the right CPU. However, the function may be
called from a worker thread already bound to a different CPU in which
case that won't work.
Make acpi_processor_set_throttling() use work_on_cpu() as appropriate
instead of abusing set_cpus_allowed_ptr().

Some devices have duplicate entries in there brightness levels table, ie
on my Dell Latitude E6430 the table looks like this:

Notice that brightness values 0-5 are all mapped to 5. This means that
if userspace writes any value between 0 and 5 to the brightness sysfs attribute
and then reads it, it will always return 0, which is somewhat unexpected.
This is a problem for ie gnome-settings-daemon, which uses read-modify-write
logic when the users presses the brightness up or down keys. This is done
this way to take brightness changes from other sources into account.
On this specific laptop what happens once the brightness has been set to 0,
is that gsd reads 0, adds 5, writes 5, and on the next brightness up key press
again reads 0, so things get stuck at the lowest brightness setting.
Filtering out the duplicate table entries, makes any write to brightness
read back as the written value as one would expect, fixing this.

regulator API

There is currently no facility in ACPI to express the hookup of voltage
regulators, the expectation is that the regulators that exist in the
system will be handled transparently by firmware if they need software
control at all. This means that if for some reason the regulator API is
enabled on such a system it should assume that any supplies that devices
need are provided by the system at all relevant times without any software
intervention.
Tell the regulator core to make this assumption by calling
regulator_has_full_constraints(). Do this as soon as we know we are using
ACPI so that the information is available to the regulator core as early
as possible. This will cause the regulator core to pretend that there is
an always on regulator supplying any supply that is requested but that has
not otherwise been mapped which is the behaviour expected on a system with
ACPI.
Should the ability to specify regulators be added in future revisions of
ACPI then once we have support for ACPI mappings in the kernel the same
assumptions will apply. It is also likely that systems will default to a
mode of operation which does not require any interpretation of these
mappings in order to be compatible with existing operating system releases
so it should remain safe to make these assumptions even if the mappings
exist but are not supported by the kernel.

This change fixes a problem where a Store operation to an ArgX object
that contained a reference to a field object did not complete the
automatic dereference and then write to the actual field object.
Instead, the object type of the field object was inadvertently changed
to match the type of the source operand. The new behavior will actually
write to the field object (buffer field or field unit), thus matching
the correct ACPI-defined behavior.

Previously, references to these objects were resolved only to the actual
FieldUnit or BufferField object. The correct behavior is to resolve these
references to an actual value.
The problem is that DerefOf did not resolve these objects to actual
values. An "Integer" object is simple, return the value. But a field in
an operation region will require a read operation. For a BufferField, the
appropriate data must be extracted from the parent buffer.
NOTE: It appears that this issues is present in Windows7 but not
Windows8.

For the cases such as a store of a string to an existing package
object, implement the store as a CopyObject().
This is a small departure from the ACPI specification which states
that the control method should be aborted in this case. However,
ASLTS suite depends on this behavior.

The ECDT of ASUSTEK L4R doesn't provide correct command and data
I/O ports. The DSDT provides the correct information instead.
For this reason, add this machine to quirk list for ECDT validation
and use the EC information from the DSDT.

The _BIX method returns extended battery info as a package.
According the ACPI spec (ACPI 5, Section 10.2.2.2), the first member
of that package should be "Revision". However, the current ACPI
battery driver treats the first member as "Power Unit" which should
be the second member. This causes the result of _BIX return data
parsing to be incorrect.
Fix this by adding a new member called 'revision' to struct
acpi_battery and adding the offsetof() information on it to
extended_info_offsets[] as the first row.

device->driver_data needs to be cleared when releasing its data,
mem_device, in an error path of acpi_memory_device_add().
The function evaluates the _CRS of memory device objects, and fails
when it gets an unexpected resource or cannot allocate memory. A
kernel crash or data corruption may occur when the kernel accesses
the stale pointer.

HP Folio 13's BIOS defines CMOS RTC Operation Region and the EC's
_REG method will access that region. To allow the CMOS RTC region
handler to be installed before the EC _REG method is first invoked,
add ec_skip_dsdt_scan() as HP Folio 13's callback to ec_dmi_table.

This patch addresses kernel bug 56661. BIOS reports an incorrect
backlight value, causing the driver to switch off the backlight
completely during startup. This patch ignores the incorrect value from

On HP m4 lapops, BIOS reports minimum backlight on boot and
causes backlight to dim completely. This ignores the initial backlight
values and set to max brightness.

The EC driver works abnormally with IBF flag always set.
IBF means "The host has written a byte of data to the command
or data port, but the embedded controller has not yet read it".
If IBF is set in the EC status and not cleared, this will cause
all subsequent EC requests to fail with a timeout error.
Change the EC driver so that it doesn't refuse to restart a
transaction if IBF is set in the status. Also increase the
number of transaction restarts to 5, as it turns out that 2
is not sufficient in some cases.
This bug happens on several different machines (Asus V1S,
Dell Latitude E6530, Samsung R719, Acer Aspire 5930G,
Sony Vaio SR19VN and others).

Found problem on system that firmware that could handle pci aer.
Firmware get error reporting after pci injecting error, before os boots.
But after os boots, firmware can not get report anymore, even pci=noaer
is passed.
Root cause: BIOS _OSC has problem with query bit checking.
It turns out that BIOS vendor is copying example code from ACPI Spec.
In ACPI Spec 5.0, page 290:

When Query flag is set, And(CDW1,1) will be 1, Not(1) will return 0xfffffffe.
So it will get into code path that should be for control set only.
BIOS acpi code should be changed to "If (LEqual(And(CDW1,1), 0)))"
Current kernel code is using _OSC query to notify firmware about support
from OS and then use _OSC to set control bits.
During query support, current code is using all possible controls.
So will execute code that should be only for control set stage.
That will have problem when pci=noaer or aer firmware_first is used.
As firmware have that control set for os aer already in query support stage,
but later will not os aer handling.
We should avoid passing all possible controls, just use osc_control_set
instead.
That should workaround BIOS bugs with affected systems on the field
as more bios vendors are copying sample code from ACPI spec.

Originally 'efi_enabled' indicated whether a kernel was booted from
EFI firmware. Over time its semantics have changed, and it now
indicates whether or not we are booted on an EFI machine with
bit-native firmware, e.g. 64-bit kernel with 64-bit firmware.
The immediate motivation for this patch is the bug report at,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1040557
which details how running a platform driver on an EFI machine that is
designed to run under BIOS can cause the machine to become
bricked. Also, the following report,
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47121
details how running said driver can also cause Machine Check
Exceptions. Drivers need a new means of detecting whether they're
running on an EFI machine, as sadly the expression,
if (!efi_enabled)
hasn't been a sufficient condition for quite some time.
Users actually want to query 'efi_enabled' for different reasons -
what they really want access to is the list of available EFI
facilities.
For instance, the x86 reboot code needs to know whether it can invoke
the ResetSystem() function provided by the EFI runtime services, while
the ACPI OSL code wants to know whether the EFI config tables were
mapped successfully. There are also checks in some of the platform
driver code to simply see if they're running on an EFI machine (which
would make it a bad idea to do BIOS-y things).
This patch is a prereq for the samsung-laptop fix patch.

If cpuidle is disabled, that means that:
per_cpu(acpi_cpuidle_device, pr->id)
is set to NULL as the acpi_processor_power_init ends up failing at
retval = cpuidle_register_driver(&acpi_idle_driver)
(in acpi_processor_power_init) and never sets the per_cpu idle
device. So when acpi_processor_hotplug on CPU online notification
tries to reference said device it crashes:

When system enters power off, the _PSW of Lid device is enabled.
But this may cause the system to reboot instead of power off.
A proper way to fix this is to always disable lid wakeup capability for S5.

At one point acpi_device_set_id() checks if acpi_device_hid(device)
returns NULL, but that never happens, so system bus devices with an
empty list of PNP IDs are given the dummy HID ("device") instead of
the "system bus HID" ("LNXSYBUS"). Fix the code to use the right
check.

The current acpisleep DMI checks only run when CONFIG_SUSPEND is set.
And this may break hibernation on some platforms when CONFIG_SUSPEND
is cleared.
Move acpisleep DMI check into #ifdef CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP instead.

Add a quirk to correctly report battery capacity on 2010 and 2011
Lenovo Thinkpad models.
The affected models that I tested (x201, t410, t410s, and x220)
exhibit a problem where, when battery capacity reporting unit is mAh,
the values being reported are wrong. Pre-2010 and 2012 models appear
to always report in mWh and are thus unaffected. Also, in mid-2012
Lenovo issued a BIOS update for the 2011 models that fixes the issue
(tested on x220 with a post-1.29 BIOS). No such update is available
for the 2010 models, so those still need this patch.
Problem description: for some reason, the affected Thinkpads switch
the reporting unit between mAh and mWh; generally, mAh is used when a
laptop is plugged in and mWh when it's unplugged, although a
suspend/resume or rmmod/modprobe is needed for the switch to take
effect. The values reported in mAh are *always* wrong. This does
not appear to be a kernel regression; I believe that the values were
never reported correctly. I tested back to kernel 2.6.34, with
multiple machines and BIOS versions.
Simply plugging a laptop into mains before turning it on is enough to
reproduce the problem. Here's a sample /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
from Thinkpad x220 (before a BIOS update) with a 4-cell battery:

Can you see how the values for "design capacity", etc., differ by a
factor of 10 instead of 14.8 (the design voltage of this battery)?
On the battery itself it says: 14.8V, 1.95Ah, 29Wh, so clearly the
values reported in mWh are correct and the ones in mAh are not.
My guess is that this problem has been around ever since those
machines were released, but because the most common Thinkpad
batteries are rated at 10.8V, the error (8%) is small enough that it
simply hasn't been noticed or at least nobody could be bothered to
look into it.
My patch works around the problem by adjusting the incorrectly
reported mAh values by "10000 / design_voltage". The patch also has
code to figure out if it should be activated or not. It only
activates on Lenovo Thinkpads, only when the unit is mAh, and, as an
extra precaution, only when the battery capacity reported through
ACPI does not match what is reported through DMI (I've never
encountered a machine where the first two conditions would be true
but the last would not, but better safe than sorry).
I've been using this patch for close to a year on several systems
without any problems.

The Linux EC driver includes a mechanism to detect GPE storms,
and switch from interrupt-mode to polling mode. However, polling
mode sometimes doesn't work, so the workaround is problematic.
Also, different systems seem to need the threshold for detecting
the GPE storm at different levels.
ACPI_EC_STORM_THRESHOLD was initially 20 when it's created, and
was changed to 8 in 2.6.28 commit 06cf7d3c7 "ACPI: EC: lower interrupt storm
threshold" to fix kernel bug 11892 by forcing the laptop in that bug to
work in polling mode. However in bug 45151, it works fine in interrupt
mode if we lift the threshold back to 20.
This patch makes the threshold a module parameter so that user has a
flexible option to debug/workaround this issue.
The default is unchanged.

message will be printed.
This commit is for ZPODD on Intel ZPODD capable platforms, on other

Commit 0090def("ACPI: Add interface to register/unregister device
to/from power resources") used resource_lock to protect the devices list
that relies on power resource. It caused a mutex dead lock, as below
acpi_power_on ---> lock resource_lock

acpi_power_on_device
acpi_power_get_inferred_state
acpi_power_get_list_state ---> lock resource_lock
This patch adds a new mutex "devices_lock" to protect the devices list
and calls acpi_power_on_device in acpi_power_on, instead of
__acpi_power_on, after the resource_lock is released.

power_supply_register() return value check

In the ac.c, power_supply_register()'s return value is not checked.
As a result, the driver's add() ops may return success
even though the device failed to initialize.
For example, some BIOS may describe two ACADs in the same DSDT.
The second ACAD device will fail to register,
but ACPI driver's add() ops returns sucessfully.
The ACPI device will receive ACPI notification and cause OOPS.

Many firmwares have a common register definition bug where 8-bit
access width is specified for a 32-bit register. Ideally this should
be fixed in the BIOS, but earlier versions of the kernel did not
complain, so fix that up silently.

Commit d640113fe80e45ebd4a5b420b introduced a regression on SMP
systems where the processor core with ACPI id zero is disabled
(typically should be the case because of hyperthreading).
The regression got spread through stable kernels.
On 3.0.X it got introduced via 3.0.18.
Such platforms may be rare, but do exist.
Look out for a disabled processor with acpi_id 0 in dmesg:
ACPI: LAPIC (acpi_id[0x00] lapic_id[0x10] disabled)
This problem has been observed on a:
HP Proliant BL280c G6 blade
This patch restricts the introduced workaround to platforms
with nr_cpu_ids <= 1.

The bug snuck back in in commit 2feec47d4c5f (ACPICA: ACPI 5: Support
for new FADT SleepStatus, SleepControl registers, 2012-02-14),
presumably by copy/pasting a copy of the code without that fix for the
legacy case.
On affected machines, after that commit, the machine locks up hard on
resume from suspend. The same fix as seven years ago still works.

The comparison between the system sleep state being entered
and the lowest system sleep state the given device may wake up
from in acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() is reversed, because the
specification (ACPI 5.0) says that for wakeup to work:
"The sleeping state being entered must be less than or equal to the
power state declared in element 1 of the _PRW object."
In other words, the state returned by _PRW is the deepest
(lowest-power) system sleep state the device is capable of waking up
the system from.
Moreover, acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() also should check if the
wakeup capability is supported through ACPI, because in principle it
may be done via native PCIe PME, for example, in which case _SxW
should not be evaluated.

The acpi_pad driver can get stuck in destroy_power_saving_task()
waiting for kthread_stop() to stop a power_saving thread. The problem
is that the isolated_cpus_lock mutex is owned when
destroy_power_saving_task() calls kthread_stop(), which waits for a
power_saving thread to end, and the power_saving thread tries to
acquire the isolated_cpus_lock when it calls round_robin_cpu(). This
patch fixes the issue by making round_robin_cpu() use its own mutex.

Commit 1cc0c998fdf2 ("ACPI: Fix D3hot v D3cold confusion") introduced a
bug in __acpi_bus_set_power() and changed the behavior of
acpi_pci_set_power_state() in such a way that it generally doesn't work
as expected if PCI_D3hot is passed to it as the second argument.
First off, if ACPI_STATE_D3 (equal to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD) is passed to
__acpi_bus_set_power() and the explicit_set flag is set for the D3cold
state, the function will try to execute AML method called "_PS4", which
doesn't exist |
