2008-07-14x86: Replace NSC/Cyrix specific chipset access macros by inlined functions.Juergen Beisert
Due to index register access ordering problems, when using macros a line like this fails (and does nothing): setCx86(CX86_CCR2, getCx86(CX86_CCR2) | 0x88); With inlined functions this line will work as expected. Note about a side effect: Seems on Geode GX1 based systems the "suspend on halt power saving feature" was never enabled due to this wrong macro expansion. With inlined functions it will be enabled, but this will stop the TSC when the CPU runs into a HLT instruction. Kernel output something like this: Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -472746897 ns) This is the 3rd version of this patch. - Adding missed arch/i386/kernel/cpu/mtrr/state.c Thanks to Andres Salomon - Adding some big fat comments into the new header file Suggested by Andi Kleen AK: fixed x86-64 compilation Adrian Bunk: Added workaround for x86_64 compilation. 2008-01-16[SPARC64]: Fix endless loop in cheetah_xcall_deliver().David S. Miller
[ Upsteam commit: 0de56d1ab83323d604d95ca193dcbd28388dbabb ] We need to mask out the proper bits when testing the dispatch status register else we can see unrelated NACK bits from previous cross call sends. 2007-11-13i386: fixup TRACE_IRQ breakagePeter Zijlstra
The TRACE_IRQS_ON function in iret_exc: calls a C function without ensuring that the segments are set properly. Move the trace function and the enabling of interrupt into the C stub. Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@kernel.org>
2007-11-13Handle bogus %cs selector in single-step instruction decoding (CVE-2007-3731)Roland McGrath
The code for LDT segment selectors was not robust in the face of a bogus selector set in %cs via ptrace before the single-step was done. Signed-off-by: Roland McGrath <roland@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@kernel.org>
2007-11-02[SPARC64]: Fix show_stack() when stack argument is NULL.David S. Miller

2007-11-01[SPARC64] pass correct addr in get_fb_unmapped_area(MAP_FIXED)Chris Wright
Looks like the MAP_FIXED case is using the wrong address hint. I'd expect the comment "don't mess with it" means pass the request straight on through, not change the address requested to -ENOMEM. 2007-10-28[IA64] fix ia64 is_hugepage_only_rangeKen Chen
fix is_hugepage_only_range() definition to be "overlaps" instead of "within architectural restricted hugetlb address range". Simplify the ia64 specific code that used to use is_hugepage_only_range() to just check which region the address is in. 2007-10-19x86: HUGETLBFS and DEBUG_PAGEALLOC are incompatibleKen Chen
DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is not compatible with hugetlb page support. That debug option turns off PSE. Once it is turned off in CR4, the cpu will ignore pse bit in the pmd and causing infinite page-not- present faults. So disable DEBUG_PAGEALLOC if the user selected hugetlbfs. 2007-10-18make UML compile (FC6/x86-64)Ulrich Drepper
I need this patch to get a UML kernel to compile. This is with the kernel headers in FC6 which are automatically generated from the kernel tree. Some headers are missing but those files don't need them. At least it appears so since the resuling kernel works fine. Tested on x86-64. 2007-10-18[SPARC64]: Fix bugs in SYSV IPC handling in 64-bit processes.David S. Miller
Thanks to Tom Callaway for the excellent bug report and test case. sys_ipc() has several problems, most to due with semaphore call handling: 1) 'err' return should be a 'long' 2) "union semun" is passed in a register on 64-bit compared to 32-bit which provides it on the stack and therefore by reference 3) Second and third arguments to SEMCTL are swapped compared to 32-bit. 2007-10-18[POWERPC] Fix handling of stfiwx math emulationKumar Gala
Its legal for the stfiwx instruction to have RA = 0 as part of its effective address calculation. This is illegal for all other XE form instructions. Add code to compute the proper effective address for stfiwx if RA = 0 rather than treating it as illegal. Adrian Bunk: Backported to 2.6.16. 2007-10-06[POWERPC] Flush registers to proper task contextKumar Gala
When we flush register state for FP, Altivec, or SPE in flush_*_to_thread we need to respect the task_struct that the caller has passed to us. Most cases we are called with current, however sometimes (ptrace) we may be passed a different task_struct. This showed up when using gdbserver debugging a simple program that used floating point. When gdb tried to show the FP regs they all showed up as 0, because the child's FP registers were never properly flushed to memory. 2007-10-06x86_64: Zero extend all registers after ptrace in 32bit entry path ↵Andi Kleen
(CVE-2007-4573) Strictly it's only needed for eax. It actually does a little more than strictly needed -- the other registers are already zero extended. 2007-08-30[SPARC32]: Fix rounding errors in ndelay/udelay implementation.Mark Fortescue
__ndelay and __udelay have not been delayung >= specified time. The problem with __ndelay has been tacked down to the rounding of the multiplier constant. By changing this, delays > app 18us are correctly calculated. The problem with __udelay has also been tracked down to rounding issues. Changing the multiplier constant (to match that used in sparc64) corrects for large delays and adding in a rounding constant corrects for trunctaion errors in the claculations. Many short delays will return without looping. This is not an error as there is the fixed delay of doing all the maths to calculate the loop count. 2007-08-30[SPARC32]: Fix bug in sparc optimized memset.Alexander Shmelev
Sparc optimized memset (arch/sparc/lib/memset.S) does not fill last byte of the memory area, if area size is less than 8 bytes and start address is not word (4-bytes) aligned. Here is code chunk where bug located: /* %o0 - memory address, %o1 - size, %g3 - value */ 8: add %o0, 1, %o0 subcc %o1, 1, %o1 bne,a 8b stb %g3, [%o0 - 1] This code should write byte every loop iteration, but last time delay instruction stb is not executed because branch instruction sets "annul" bit. Patch replaces bne,a by bne instruction. Error can be reproduced by simple kernel module: -------------------- #include <linux/module.h> #include <linux/config.h> #include <linux/kernel.h> #include <linux/errno.h> #include <string.h> static void do_memset(void **p, int size) { memset(p, 0x00, size); } static int __init memset_test_init(void) { char fooc[8]; int *fooi; memset(fooc, 0xba, sizeof(fooc)); do_memset((void**)(fooc + 3), 1); fooi = (int*) fooc; printk("%08X %08X\n", fooi[0], fooi[1]); return -1; } static void __exit memset_test_cleanup(void) { return; } module_init(memset_test_init); module_exit(memset_test_cleanup); MODULE_LICENSE("GPL"); EXPORT_NO_SYMBOLS; -------------------- Signed-off-by: Alexander Shmelev <ashmelev@task.sun.mcst.ru> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-04-24x86 microcode: don't check the sizeShaohua Li
IA32 manual says if micorcode update's size is 0, then the size is default size (2048 bytes). But this doesn't suggest all microcode update's size should be above 2048 bytes to me. 2007-04-20[SPARC64]: Fix SBUS IOMMU allocation code.David S. Miller
There are several IOMMU allocator bugs. Instead of trying to fix this overly complicated code, just mirror the PCI IOMMU arena allocator which is very stable and well stress tested. I tried to make the code as identical as possible so we can switch sun4u PCI and SBUS over to a common piece of IOMMU code. All that will be need are two callbacks, one to do a full IOMMU flush and one to do a streaming buffer flush. This patch gets rid of a lot of hangs and mysterious crashes on SBUS sparc64 systems, at least for me. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de>
2007-04-13i386: fix file_read_actor() and pipe_read() for original i386 systemsThomas Gleixner
The __copy_to_user_inatomic() calls in file_read_actor() and pipe_read() are broken on original i386 machines, where WP-works-ok == false, as __copy_to_user_inatomic() on such systems calls functions which might sleep and/or contain cond_resched() calls inside of a kmap_atomic() region. The original check for WP-works-ok was in access_ok(), but got moved during the 2.5 series to fix a race vs. swap. Return the number of bytes to copy in the case where we are in an atomic region, so the non atomic code pathes in file_read_actor() and pipe_read() are taken. This could be optimized to avoid the kmap_atomicby moving the check for WP-works-ok into fault_in_pages_writeable(), but this is more intrusive and can be done later. 2007-03-21i386 bootioremap / kexec fixKeith Mannthey
With CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START set to a non default values the i386 boot_ioremap code calculated its pte index wrong and users of boot_ioremap have their areas incorrectly mapped (for me SRAT table not mapped during early boot). 2007-03-20[SPARC64]: Add missing HPAGE_MASK masks on address parameters.David S. Miller

2007-02-14uml: fix signal frame alignmentJeff Dike
Use the same signal frame alignment calculations as the underlying architecture. x86_64 appeared to do this, but the "- 8" was really subtracting 8 * sizeof(struct rt_sigframe) rather than 8 bytes. 2006-12-17x86-64: Mark rdtsc as sync only for netburst, not for core2Arjan van de Ven
On the Core2 cpus, the rdtsc instruction is not serializing (as defined in the architecture reference since rdtsc exists) and due to the deep speculation of these cores, it's possible that you can observe time go backwards between cores due to this speculation. Since the kernel already deals with this with the SYNC_RDTSC flag, the solution is simple, only assume that the instruction is serializing on family 15... The price one pays for this is a slightly slower gettimeofday (by a dozen or two cycles), but that increase is quite small to pay for a really-going-forward tsc counter. Backport by Chris Wright. 2006-12-17IA64: bte_unaligned_copy() transfers one extra cache line.Robin Holt
When called to do a transfer that has a start offset within the cache line which is uneven between source and destination and a length which terminates the source of the copy exactly on a cache line, one extra line gets copied into a temporary buffer. This is normally not an issue since the buffer is a kernel buffer and only the requested information gets copied into the user buffer. The problem arises when the source ends at the very last physical page of memory. That last cache line does not exist and results in the SHUB chip raising an MCA. 2006-11-20POWERPC: Make alignment exception always check exception tableBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The alignment exception used to only check the exception table for -EFAULT, not for other errors.
