" Jan took a look at the preliminary patch and came up a fix that solves this problem: "This code gets called after all registers other than those handled by IRET got already restored, hence a null selector in %ds or a non-null one that got loaded from a code or read-only data descriptor would cause a kernel mode fault (with the potential of crashing the kernel as a whole, if panic_on_oops is set)." The way to fix this is to realize that the we can only relay on the registers that IRET restores. The two that are guaranteed are the %cs and %ss as they are always fixed GDT selectors. Also they are inaccessible from user mode - so they cannot be altered. This is the approach taken in this patch. Another alternative option suggested by Jan would be to relay on the subtle realization that using the %ebp or %esp relative references uses the %ss segment. In which case we could switch from using %eax to %ebp and would not need the %ss over-rides. That would also require one extra instruction to compensate for the one place where the register is used as scaled index. However Andrew pointed out that is too subtle and if further work was to be done in this code-path it could escape folks attention and lead to accidents. 2011-09-01xen: x86_32: do not enable iterrupts when returning from exception in ↵Igor Mammedov
interrupt context If vmalloc page_fault happens inside of interrupt handler with interrupts disabled then on exit path from exception handler when there is no pending interrupts, the following code (arch/x86/xen/xen-asm_32.S:112): cmpw $0x0001, XEN_vcpu_info_pending(%eax) sete XEN_vcpu_info_mask(%eax) will enable interrupts even if they has been previously disabled according to eflags from the bounce frame (arch/x86/xen/xen-asm_32.S:99) testb $X86_EFLAGS_IF>>8, 8+1+ESP_OFFSET(%esp) setz XEN_vcpu_info_mask(%eax) Solution is in setting XEN_vcpu_info_mask only when it should be set according to cmpw $0x0001, XEN_vcpu_info_pending(%eax) but not clearing it if there isn't any pending events. 2009-10-29percpu: remove per_cpu__ prefix.Rusty Russell
Now that the return from alloc_percpu is compatible with the address of per-cpu vars, it makes sense to hand around the address of per-cpu variables. To make this sane, we remove the per_cpu__ prefix we used created to stop people accidentally using these vars directly. Now we have sparse, we can use that (next patch). tj: * Updated to convert stuff which were missed by or added after the original patch. * Kill per_cpu_var() macro. 2009-02-04xen: make direct versions of irq_enable/disable/save/restore to common codeJeremy Fitzhardinge
Now that x86-64 has directly accessible percpu variables, it can also implement the direct versions of these operations, which operate on a vcpu_info structure directly embedded in the percpu area. In fact, the 64-bit versions are more or less identical, and so can be shared. The only two differences are: 1. xen_restore_fl_direct takes its argument in eax on 32-bit, and rdi on 64-bit. Unfortunately it isn't possible to directly refer to the 2nd lsb of rdi directly (as you can with %ah), so the code isn't quite as dense. 2. check_events needs to variants to save different registers. 2008-07-31xen: compile irq functions without -pg for ftraceJeremy Fitzhardinge
For some reason I managed to miss a bunch of irq-related functions which also need to be compiled without -pg when using ftrace. This patch moves them into their own file, and starts a cleanup process I've been meaning to do anyway.
